MPs vote down amendment aimed at protecting tenants from the cost of remediation

The tussle between the House of Lords and the House of Commons as to the extent leaseholders should be liable for the costs of fire safety works on their buildings continued yesterday as MPs in the Commons voted down an amendment by the Lords aimed at protecting tenants from the cost of remediation costs.

However, the Lords subsequently approved a new amendment aimed at providing protection to leaseholders. As a consequence the bill will be returned to the Commons for further debate today.

With the commons seemingly determined to deny tenants the protection being sought by the landlords and the Lords set on ensuring there is come from protection for tenants, the argument is set to run for a while yet.
